What would be a practical and useful gift to give a female college student? I'm looking for ideas on something that she could really use, not anything ornamental. If it helps keep her safe while she's there, even better.

I've thought about pepper spray, seriously. I know that probably sounds crazy but you read so much about students getting attacked. Is that nuts? I want her to be safe but I don't want to make her too nervous to enjoy college life either.

Perhaps something like a high value phone card so she could always call home if she needed to would be more subtle? I even thought about self defense classes if there was a place nearby she could attend.

Any ideas on what else I could give her would be appreciated. Thanks!
