How can I grow my RSS feed subscribers?

I have a Wordpress based magazine site that's about 14 months old and have never got around to really investigating the best way to grow my RSS feed email subscribers. Any ideas on how to get them to sign up? The site is updated fairly regularly, usually weekly or longer if I'm busy. It discusses writing and related topics. It's not exactly a small niche!

I ran a book giveaway recently and subscribing could be counted as an entry. That wasn't that successful a tactic. I should add that I won't resort to having people sign up that aren't interested in the subject just to add numbers. I get plenty visiting via Twitter and Stumbleupon. They just don't sign up when they are there.

a link to the site would be helpful.

Personally, I just don't use RSS. I prefer to manually go to and visit the websites and see if they've updated. Maybe you need to create an article about RSS and what it does, and how it helps people to get more people to sign up.

You might want to offer a free ebooklet to everyone who signs up (an autoresponder sends them a link to a pdf). I do that on my site, www.esldollarstore.com, and I get a new subscriber every week or so.

Using facebook and myspace could be helpful as well. Try to use those ad searches to gear towards some English teachers maybe.

When I kept a blog I did a few things.
First, added a blog to catalogues and aggregates. Second, set up cross-posting to different platforms. Friendfeed, twitter etc. for instance.

Well, if you are getting traffic from two of the best sources online, then why not just try a simple popup? There are some that are quite simple and easy to use, some plugin right to wordpress.

You can have it popup and ask if they like the site (would be more for regular readers) and to subscribe if so.

The other option is using a plugin called feed footer. this adds a bit of text with links if you want to the bottom of your feed. now you use that as a place to encourage people to sign up. Basically you could post that you have added a "special" area to the site and the link is located in the feed footer. the only way they get the link is if they sign up to the feed.

this tactic has worked well for me lately. Good luck!
