Keeping deer at bay naturally?

I love animals and am blessed to be living in a beautiful rural spot. Critters run all over the place! It's not unusual to come within twenty feet of a family of deer at night or even sometimes in the day. Deer around here are used to our neighbors setting up deer feeders in their yards so are not too timid about humans.

I'm already thinking about the planting season ahead. Every year I run into a problem with the deer eating my flowers. Not that I'm a great gardener when it comes to flora or plant prizewinning flowers! I do like a small flowerbed though for the colors and want a natural way to deter them from chewing it all up in the night.

I wouldn't do anything that would hurt them like put down poison or set traps. I'd rather sacrifice my flowers first. It's not feasible either to fence in the yard because it's too large an area and local regulations don't allow fences over 24 inches high around residential properties anyway.

Any ideas on how to get them to go have their midnight snack somewhere else?

Thanks!
