Does anyone know how to get olive oil stains out of my clothes? I was doing some Italian cooking, things got intense, and, well, now there is olive oil on some of my clothes. I tried putting them in the washing machine with normal detergent, but it wasn’t that effective. Are there any special remedies that will get this oil off my clothes?

Hi there,

Unfortunately, if you already washed your clothes, I'm afraid it's going to be impossible, especially if you washed it with warm water as it tends to "boil" the oil and leaves the stain.

You may want to try to use "Marseille soap". Put a few drops of cold water over the stain and gently rub it with this soap on both sides of the clothes. Then wash them again normally.
Depending on your location, it might get difficult to find some Marseille soap but you can purchase some online easily.

Good luck with your stain!

pre-wash (or soak spots) with dish detergent... it's especially good on grease and oil stains!!

Try making a paste with a little laundry detergent and sugar(about the consistency of toothpaste) and rub a generous amount onto the oil stains. Let it sit with the paste on there for about an hour, then wash like normal.

Scrub the stains with washing up liquid but remember to rinse well before you put it into the washing machine to avoid too many bubbles!

If the garment has not been laundered yet, try this: rub some talcum powder into the item and let sit for a couple of hours. The talcum will absorb the oil, or at least most of it. Then wash in warm water with detergent, but check to see if the stain came out before drying it. If the stain did not come out yet, apply some stain pre-treatment to it, and let sit for a day or so, then launder as usual.

I've always used dish detergent to get oily stains out of clothes. I just spot treat the area with a little cold water and detergent and scrub away. It seems to work pretty well since it's made to break up oil. I use it with chocolate stains too - works like a charm.

Not sure how it will fair if the garment has already been washed though. But I think it would be worth a try.

Oil is a hard one. Try putting some heavy duty dishwashing liquid on the stain, rub it in, wait an hour before washing. You may need to repeat.
