I wrote today for the Maryland Public Policy Institute on the two major differences between democrats and republicans, as I see them.

This is my opinion.  Now I want yours.  What sets the political parties apart?  What is it that makes you vote one way or the other?

Its been my opinion the left needs a new manifesto, because I really dislike Marx, and even socialist countries have abandoned what Marx and Engels laid out.

So given that I have been analyzing what I see now.

I believe to summarize the position of the left should be:

We are all in this together.

And the position of the right is most definitely:

I need nobody else, I stand by myself.

Actually the way the GOP have been behaving lately you'd think their motto is:

We are only in this for the rich and everybody else can take care of themselves.

In other words, socialism for the rich.

I read your article, and I think you've forgot about where the money Bush had to spend when he came into office - it came from the result of a democratic presidency. Bush pretty much destroyed the economy by starting 2 wars, massively increasing the size of govt and then giving tax cuts. There is no logic to that, and you are forgetting about the massive hand out Bush gave to Wall St at the end of his presidency because the economy already started crashing under the weight of these expenses.

Democratic presidencies don't necessarily have to be expensive, its just their philosophy that we need to take care of all people rather than just the rich, which is based on the fallacy of trickle down economics. Corporations are currently posting massive profits, yet unemployment is still high. Hence trickle down economics does not work.

However taking care of the poor in fact stimulates the economy better because the poor spend money and the money goes rushing up to the rich anyway.

Taking care of the health of people is fundamental to the well being of a nation's citizens. Getting some terrible disease should not bankrupt a family. Getting a disease is terrible enough, let alone the anxiety of how to pay for all the bills.

Most people think that its only Europe that has UHC, but its not true, Brazil, Argentina, Costa Rica all have UHC. only countries like Columbia, Bolivia and the US don't. Having the US included with Columbia and Bolivia should give you pause.

I see the position of the Right being short sighted, because even if you think you can do this on your own, you are wrong. Not even the richest amongst us can afford to pay for the roads, the police, the policing of airports, the quality of air, water & food.

The conservatives somehow don't see all the opportunities they had to get to where they are, good schools, meeting the right people, luck they didn't get sick or have an accident that crippled them. And what if they had that accident that crippled them, it would have crippled them financially.

We all need each other, we are foolish to think we don't need even simple things like the poor being so poor that it increases the crime rate. when there is chronic unemployment, spousal and child abuse rises, families break down, children are on the street.

We must be in this together.

I often wonder if the 2nd world war happened now, would the US be able to pull together to win? I don't know because the bipartisanship seems to be so great now.

John, I read your blog and can see absolutely where you are coming from with your opinions.

I'm going to give you my honest view. I can't tell the difference between the politicians, republican or democrat anymore (if I ever could). I'm very leery of all career politicians. If they've made a "Career" out of politicking then that means they view it as a source of income and look to it for their future retirement. Meaning they are looking out for number 1 and that is not America as a whole.
