I have always felt that there's a place for comedy in politics. Politicians are fair game. They stood for public office voluntarily. Once you put yourself in the limelight in a professional capacity, you're open to being targeted by comedians for your actions.

I know others that feel the opposite, that politicians should be respected and above ridicule. Their argument is this: how can the general public be expected to follow them when there are comedians tearing them down at every opportunity? The public make judgements based on the jokes, not the actions. Few investigate the story behind the joke and just take it at face value that the politician messed up.

Is there any time or topic a comedian should leave well alone when it comes to comedic value? Some feel power lies more in their hands than the politicians. Like it or not, their jokes influence people's opinions of a politician, even when they know little of their character or political standing. If you think jokes don't, ask Sarah Palin.

Any thoughts on that would be appreciated. Thanks!
