Asking for a raise

I had a conversation the other day with a friend who knew she deserved a raise but was wondering how to ask for one.

I responded that I would first of all talk to her boss when she knew he would be willing and open to discussion.  I would explain what I did for the company and how much I had grown since I was hired (or since my last raise), justifying why I deserved more more.  Then I would ask what he was willing to do about it.

What about you?  Have you asked for a raise recently?  How did you approach the conversation?  And ideas or advice?

Yes, this is all good advice to which I would add the following:

I would recommend that your friend develop essentially a Business Case justifying in very concrete, tangible, bottom line = dollars ($), ways that her value to the company has increased thereby justifying the (specific) amount of a raise she is seeking / feels that she deserves.

I would also recommend that she research the current salary range of others performing in a similar position, with similar years of experience, in her industry and market, and use this as part of the aforementioned Business Case, if and only if, her current salary is below or in the low end of this salary range ;)

Part of this salary research may/should include looking at the salaries offered in recent job postings for jobs for which she is qualified.

She also needs to think about what she is willing to do if she doesn't get any raise or not the amount of raise she is looking for, e.g.:

Is she willing to quit / move to another job if she doesn't get the amount of raise she wants?

Even if this is not verbalized in the discussions, you know the boss is thinking about the probability she will actually quit and the cost and effect on the company if they have to replace her, and if the boss doesn't think she will actually quit then they are likely to offer less or nothing, you know?

I hope this all helps your friend and others get the raises / the pay they deserve! :)

Having studied organizational behavior in school, and followed employment trends, I can tell you that your advice is right on target. Just be forward, direct, and not too pushy. Use concrete examples to justify the raise if necessary. That should do the trick.

I agree, this is the best way to ask your boss for a raise. Your friend should explain to her boss how much of an asset she is to the company. She should also show how much she has improved since she has been with the company. A stat sheet is the best way to show her boss how much improvement she has made and why she deserves a raise.

I would approach the boss at a lunch or other location outside the office.
